Chicago born African-American entertainer Esther Jones a miniature Josephine Baker à la Florence Mills, also known as Lil' Esther and Little Esther. Jones was active from 1923-1934. Esther Jones started her career as a Charleston dancer, and became a trained dancer, who could also tap dance who was an acrobat who did acrobatics, she also sung the blues and jazz songs. In 1928 while performing on stage, Esther Jones inspired Helen Kane the "Boop-Boop-a-Doop" lady to scat sing in her acts, which made the chubby Kane a sensation overnight. Esther was sort of like the black Shirley Temple but was only a rage in Europe and South America. She was known in America and made a hit in Canada but it was outside the United States where she was best known. Esther left America in 1929 and returned in 1933. She was active on the vaudeville circuits in 1934, but retired not too long after. Esther was also actively performing on the stage when the Helen Kane lawsuit was taking place under the name Little Esther the Sepia Dancing Doll and prior to that had been performing with Cab Calloway and his Orchestra. In Esther's act she would dance, make funny faces and interpolated words such as "Boo-Boo-Boo," "Wha-Da-Da," "Doo-Doo-Doo" & "Do-Do-De-Do-Ho-De-Wa-Da-De-Da," "Boo-Did-Do-Doo," "Lo-Di-De-Do," and would finish off her routine with a "De-Do."
